Landmark Citation Highlights the Need for Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches Over Compliance-Based Behavioral Systems

Another quality citation of my landmark 2018 #ABA#PTSD study.

Researchers from the University of Minnesota explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on families with children who have disabilities and chronic health conditions. Their study, based on interviews with 25 mothers, revealed three key themes: isolation, connection, and thriving. Despite facing challenges like stress and mental health issues, families found comfort in maintaining social connections virtually and discovered unexpected benefits, including a deeper understanding of their children.

The study underscores the significance of prioritizing stress reduction, fostering social connections, and leveraging children’s strengths in therapy and support for these families. It also highlights the potential harm of compliance-based behavioral systems, referencing Kupferstein (2018) to contrast them with neurodiversity-affirming approaches that can prevent post-traumatic stress disorder.
