Swedish Study Highlights the Importance of Early Detection of Depression in Autistic Teens

Swedish researchers analyzed data from 100,000 autistic teens (15-19) in the National Board of Health and Welfare database (2008–2022). The study highlights concerns around recognizing coexisting conditions like depression, stressing the need for early detection to prevent suicidality.

Under-recognition complicates screening, as autistic isolation (from sensory overload) differs from depressive isolation. Ethical approval wasn’t required due to the use of state-held data. Further research is recommended to better understand autism and depression links.
